When Cox issued the orange low-slung slot car known as “La Cucaracha” or, “the cockroach”, it created a little revolution in the slot car world. The car was fast, out-handled most of its production competitors and quickly became an icon of which cult reached well over the United States, being especially revered in Switzerland and Italy where businesses were born from manufacturing improved replicas of it.
The original issue had a translucent body, narrow rear tires and a Cox TTX150 motor, also known as a Mabuchi FT16D specially manufactured for Cox with a chrome plated can and black molded plastic endbell.
The model had a 4-year life, and was produced in the hundreds of thousands. However the late versions, with a modified body bearing front fins, a Cox NASCAR 3600 motor, setscrew rear wheels and a longer pickup are somewhat scarce. In fact few have surfaced until relatively recently, and few have survived in mint of near-mint condition. These pictures allow you to spot the differences between the early (1966) and the late (1968 and 1969) versions of the beloved thingie.
