Description

This 1/24 scale Watson-Offenhauser Indy car ready to race model was issued by Model Products Corporation in 1967. it featured a real Lexan body, much stronger under impacts than the fragile polystyrene butyrate used by all its competitors. The body was also acting as part of the chassis, supporting the complete front axle. The molded nylon chassis could be set with a functional drop arm, or set as an ISO-fulcrum chassis, pivoted around the rear axle. The motor was the new MPC “High Rise” with overhead brushes. Two sets of wheels and tires were provided at first, a regular MPC set with rubber tires that was affixed on the inner side of the box. The other set on the car was made of black silicone compound cast over the wheels. Later, these wheels were replaced by “Silastic” tires, basically neoprene foam coated with white silicone. In some cases, the sidewalls were left black from the natural color of the foam rubber, in others, the coating covered the sidewalls and was painted black by hand!
Interestingly, the clear plastic window that was set on the front of the box was draped over a wooden paint brush provided to… detail the car.
