very interesting Mike....fortunately I never had to drive those lumps, as we were the speed crazed morons of the day and were running all sorts of crazy stuff, cut down cans, very small dia tires, and Choti bodies...much faster than the scale stuff the guys were running down in SCal... this was pretty cool seeing the history again...
time to call in my order for the shop..
later crash

John,
Your motor was a Testor example of the larger Igarashi motor. Testor used both the Igarashi and the Mabuchi FT36D in their cars, both fitted with an endbell molded in brown plastic.
Tim,
It would be great if you could tell your story either here or on Slotblog.net.

Dan,
Not that we know of, but there were many copies in the day. Problem is, this chassis is rather weak and would bend too easily, deranging the gear mesh and destroying the brass pinion rather rapidly. However, a careful addition of machined spacers and the replacement of the original needle bearings by flanged ball bearings goes a long way to alleviate that issue.

I remember as a kid going to race slot cars at a local hobby shop. That was in the mid 80's. I've only been a few times since then, but it's a ton of fun. It would be interesting to see someone really figure out the formula for making a successful slot car business. Maybe make a new 1/2 or 1/4 size? Imagine that!

I just don't understand why small things like these cars are so expensive. Some owners even consider these things as investments.
