An interesting sales receipt shows that one of these two kits was purchased for only $1.52 in 1967 from a store called "Two Guys". No use to say that the price may not be the same today! Another quire rare version of this kit was sold inside a simple poly bag with a tag, also shown in the LASCM online virtual museum. Power is from a TC32 motor. The 1965 Indy 500 winner in the hands of Jim Clark, this car was the first rear-engine to win the famous classic, putting an end to the 50-year old front-engine domination that had been seriously challenged in 1961 by the apparition of Jack Brabham's diminutive Cooper-Climax. The kit offers a marvelous model that also performs well on track. The Lotus model was also available in a simplified version molded in blue or green in a Monogram racing set. Both the kit and RTR models are not rare but are very desirable. Also shown here in the last picture is the original box artwork, also in the LASCM collection. This was acquired at auction in 2004.

Issued in 1967, the model used a Fred Rannalli chassis made of two pieces of hinged aluminum, a motor bracket for the MPC "High Rise" motor and a new MPC guide flag. The front wheels were the usual MPC narrow jobs with finned drum "brakes" fitted with the ribbed "O-Ring" tires, but the rear wheels were now fitted with white sponge tires coated with white silicone. Some had their sidewalls painted black for more "realism", a curious term when the tread was obviously white. The wheels first received the usual MPC sunburst hubcaps with separate 3-prong knock-offs, but later 1968 issues had a one-piece "Halibrand" kidney-bean insert. The bodies were blow-molded styrene painted in gold or metallic red, with a silver lower part. The blow molding technique allowed the use of separate injected and plated accessories such as engine detail and driver head. An injected clear-plastic canopy is also fitted. The model was quite successful but while many have survived, few have retained their original box that also contained a spare set of rear sponge tires mounted on aluminum wheels. only one is known to have survived in sealed condition, the clear cellophane box covering hanging over a paint brush that formed the top edge of the box.

While the kits made a large part of the exported merchandise, ready to race models took less space and were favored by importers as shipping costs were lower despite the extra cost of assembly. These two Honda F1 models reflect the typical export colors, the main ones being metallic brown and silver, both fogged with black. Most of these RTR cars received plain-aluminum chassis, plain-aluminum axles and Hitachi motors called "Russkit 28". The original Dunlop molded rubber tires were now hard narrow fronts and neoprene foam rear donuts that were glued on the wheels, then ground and trued. The guides were no longer the Carrera Series setscrew unit, but one of the several 2-piece jobs marketed by Russkit but largely ignored by the customers. A supply issue could also have been present here. The two models shown here are different from the usual by that they were fitted with Pactra "Super Hemi X88" motors, because of a supply problem. Pactra came to Russkit's help by supplying a number of their Igarashi/Strombecker-sourced motors. Enough of these models have now surfaced to assess that they are authentic, a fact confirmed by Jim Russell a few years back.

The Spanish company Pink Kar also issued a relatively inexpensive copy for general distribution, but the truth is, the collectors are rarely interested by replicas. This one retains its original stickers and shows no use.

The car uses the same running gear as that of the Batmobile. The body was sourced from the famous Lancer company and was painted in house. as in most BZ models, there was no inner cockpit detailing. The wheels, sourced from Riggen, are either polished aluminum or black anodized with machined outer lip. The rear tires appear to always be the "white line" style. Riggen knock-offs complete the model, never mind that the full-size car had a wide 5-bolt wheel fixing. While the car is not so hard to find, the box is very scarce. It is likely that this model never came in the clear plastic box used for several other BZ cars that included the Batmobile.

This Lotus had a 2-piece injected plastic body, and was of the monocoque construction, the lower part of the body being a full pan on which the front end and guide as well as the motor pod were attached. The motor was the K&B Bobcat, also known as the ubiquitous Mabuchi FT36D painted in yellow. The car was supplied with a decal sheet that had little to do with the decoration of the full-size car, and was available in this commonly found orange or in a scarcer green. The packaging was used twice by K&B, the other time to house a Cooper formula one model. The model is effectively sealed inside a vacuum formed cover that needs to be cut open to access it. The box folded as a display and is a rather fragile item. This one is in pristine condition and the last picture shows the actual artwork used for the box, discovered on the Internet and acquired by the LASCM. It is a very large watercolor painting and is of rather nice quality.

The inner box came with decals, stickers for the various plated parts and a roll or thin red tape to detail the model. The body is vacuum formed but uses a specific injected plastic cockpit, a unique feature of this slot car. The rocket launchers are also made of injected plastic and are retained on the body by a an adhesive circular pad. The dome light is functional and is connected to the lead wires. The chassis is the K&B Kanguro sidewinder type, powered by the American-made K&B Hellcat motor. The car was also fitted with a K&B Cortina disc brake. The body mounts are specific to this model, different from the ones found in the chassis kit. The red plastic bat hubs were purchased from the BZ company.

This was painted in a metallic rose backed with silver, making the car quite visually attractive if not accurate. There was no interior cockpit detail. The chassis was an aluminum stamping of the same design as that previously made of steel, with a drop arm retained by a small steel pin, a nail really. The wheels and tires were Kal-Kar's own production, the rear tires being of at least two different designs, one with ink-stamped markings on their outer sidewalls. The rear axle ran inside shielded ball bearings. The motor was a Mabuchi FT26. The model is relatively rare, its packaging being extremely scarce.

Brabham F1. How did this happened is subject to speculation but it is likely that the great man's name was mixed up with the English translation for "Honda". Jack Brabham was using Honda Formula 2 engines at the same time as this kit was produced, and also was instrumental in getting Honda started in Formula One, actually testing and helping to ship a Cooper T53 "Low Line" to the Honda motor Co in 1962, so that Honda could study the 1960 world championship-winning car. The kit is quite intricate and included a Mabuchi FT36 motor, missing in this example.

The model is identical to that sold by Atlas in the USA. A second version of the body with more front spoiler material was released, but apparently none ever made it in kits. Auto World sold these modified loose bodies in "Grab Bags" in the early 1970s, and they are scarce today.

This model is of a Meskowski dirt-track, Offy-powered car, as driven by Al Unser, Roger Ward, AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti as well as so many other famous drivers. The slot car is a large model, in fact rather huge, that uses the chrome plated Strombecker "Supercharger" 12VDC motor. The car is very elegant even if molded in the wrong color for the supplied decals. In any case, a beautiful and imposing model.

This 1966 Galaxie has a specific chassis made of stamped aluminum. A Revell motor and Revell gears are used, but the wheels and tires are Unique proprietary items. This simple model runs well and only needs added weight to be very drivable. The model is relatively scarce, but rare in its original box. Loose chassis are easier to find. Unique sold painted bodies separately but they lack the self-adhesive film decals used on the RTR versions.

K&B's version was called "Jaguar" and had its endbell molded in a pale yellow color, retaining the nickel plated can and stock blue-wire armature. The motor was set inside a plastic pouch as in the two previous models using this chassis, the Mako Shark and the Batmobile. Why did K&B paint the body of this very nice model in metallic red is a mystery, but it is a very attractive car. It also had a new guide inspired by the Cox "quick-change" design, and was decorated with self-adhesive paper decals with the correct number graphic for the 1966 Nurburgring-winning Chaparral.

The "Blue Monster" is typical of the lack of proper engineering that often ruled the day in the 1960s. Would it have been tested against a couple of walls prior to being released, it could have been a better machine. The chassis is rather flimsy, made of two thin aluminum side rails, with an enormous brass tubing machined at the rear pushed through two holes in the rails, then flared. The body-mounting aluminum plate is then affixed through two tabs sticking up from the side rails, then riveted. The front of the rails is held by nothing but... the loose axle. Meaning that the first impact against any wall will bend the rail towards the center of the car, and eventually after the average teenager has driven the thing, the axle will be free to move sideways by up to 3/4", with the handling characteristics one can imagine. The saving grace is that the body is extremely thick, limiting this unavoidable disaster some. What also saved most of the survivors is that they were not driven very much because they did not deliver what the name or packaging promised, so they were parked, as many, back in the slot car boxes, hardly being used again.

It uses a unique chassis that was never sold separately or fitted to another model, and the box was not used for any other K&B model. However, this type of box was also used by K&B for some clear plastic bodies, as well as by Cox to sell their MKVII controller and Testor for their own line of painted bodies and RTR cars. The chassis is a one-piece aluminum pressing with a steel wire drop arm, bolted to a K&B Super Challenger sidewinder motor with built-in rear axle and spur gear. The body was painted and partially decorated with decals, but it was left to the customer to finish it with more decals supplied in the box. These models were licensed by Charlie Hayes, who drove the actual car in Can-Am races. A painted body kit was also sold separately in an olmost identical box, minus the blue tray and with a different sticker on one of the yellow plastic ends.

The tires had a smaller diameter for a lower center of gravity. The Bandit body was now painted black, meaning that some of the decorative decals became almost invisible. The Super Bandit had a new Cox inspired "quick change" guide flag. This model is especially difficult to find inside its original box with its original insert. The early issues came with an armature stack high-temp varnished and balanced over the varnish. Later issues had polished armature stack and better magnets. The rare last issues used the latest 1968 Mabuchi FT16DBB with ball bearing can and a very hot armature. All the motors were the product of Mura under a sub-contract.

It was also one of the few truly good cars one could buy at the time. First issued in late 1965 in a root-beer color and fitted with molded and ground sponge tires, set in a cardboard triangular window box, it first was re-issued in 1966 with gray neoprene sponge tires and smaller front tires, then in 1967 in a clear plastic box with a new dark red color. The last issue had an especially attractive metallic red body. Earlier issues have the purple AMT "Hornet" motor, while later issues have the same Mabuchi FT16D motor now painted silver.

Very popular with collectors, these models were produced in large enough quantities to satisfy a hungry market. The third picture shows an original artist box sketch from the Revell Company that survived the dumping of most documents when the business was consolidated with the Monogram model kit empire in the late 1970's.
